At what price innovation?
Published September 13th, 2006 in Uncategorized. So the Nintendo Wii’s price was announced today; $250 USD plus Wii Sports. Plenty of people seem a little disappointed Nintendo didn’t go for a more aggressive price and/or bundle, but you have to keep your eye on the bigger picture: $250 buys you something that simply isn’t possible anywhere else. Not only that, it will come in the form of a high quality product backed by a company that has demonstrated in the past they understand what makes a game fun.
In a lot of ways nothing has really changed in regards to the Wii: until people have had a chance to go hands on with the unit you simply cannot say if it will be worth the price of admission. The XBOX 360? The PS3? Both represent pretty safe bets for those with experience of the previous generation’s consoles simply because their innovations are more of the evolutionary sort then the revolutionary sort.
If the Wii really is a lot of fun to play then $250 plus a game is a very good deal indeed in the days of $500 graphics cards and $600 consoles. Should we all be lining up to buy one? Sure, but only after we’ve lined up to try one out.
Today’s Video
The first video to grace BitFlicks will in a way set the tone and standard for the ones to follow. In that spirit it seemed appropriate to launch with a homage to one of the greatest platformers of all time: Super Mario World 3 on the NES. The BitFlicks style is a mix of stop motion animation, LEGO and CGI, all mixed up until the lines between each element begin to blur.
I hope you enjoy it, and look out for a new video in a week’s time.
BitFlicks.

This looks like it’s going to be a great website. The video, while a little hard to watch at first (mainly because of the perspective) is awesome. I look forward to seeing more in the future. The best of luck to you!

P.S. The very first comment! Sweet!
Great Video! Just wondering how much CGI was used? Again Great Video! I look forward to seeing what’s to come….
Just wanted to say congrats on the new site and I wish you all the luck.

The entire scene looks like CGI to me, I’m guessing the only thing lego about it is the rendered lego blocks. Good work but would have been much more impressive and time consuming using real lego blocks.
Awesome, added to my reader.
I have been explaining to people the reason the Wii is so much money, it’s pretty simple really. I also like to explain that in the years of nintendo products, the only one to fail on me was the NES, after 12 years of use, too. My brother is on his 4th, yes, 4th PS2, and everyone I’ve known with an X-box has experienced difficulty at some point.
Nintendo seem to approach making a console in a different way, it’s more of a toy, it’s more of a solid product, than a technological feat of graphics and power.
I am unsure to whether I will find Wii Sports fun, or whether I will find the controller system fun at all. I have faith in Nintendos ability, I had my gripes with the DS thrown in my face when I fell inlove with its titles. But at the same time, it all seems like too much work. I will wait until a rich buddy gets one before I run to the story with my student loan money.
FRIGGIN AMAZING!
BTW, how long did that fkin take to make?
No way did you make all that out of bricks, you must have done some fancy computer shit. Awesome all the same though
Just a short note to clarify it was not BitFlicks.com’s intention to imply the animation was made entirely in stop motion LEGO animation, however that is how it has been represented on some sites. In the original post it was stated that “the BitFlicks style is a mix of stop motion animation, LEGO and CGI…”, which was written to indicate the animation was created using a mix of different approaches.
At BitFlicks we start with an idea and then determine what approach will yield the best result. The idea and the effect we are trying to achieve dictates the method used, which in this case involved a fair portion of CGI work. Real LEGO does feature in the animation, however as a constituent of each frame, and not the entire frame. We hope that this does not lessen peoples enjoyment of the animation and the effect created.

Yay!
Excellent site, I look forward to viewing more of your animations.
Maybe you could make the hi-res animation available via a .torrent? I’ll happily seed that for 12-24 hours.

Daaaayyyuuuuuuuuummm I luv this game.
Really nice vid. Looking forward for more!
You’ve gained a fan! Bookmarked.
Greate!!!!!
I enjoyed the Mario world.
i think this is the uncanny valley of lego animation. it’s so precise that it’s the same as watching it on a tv. so not that interesting. but good work.
WOW! Amazing! :-O
i’m not sure if i like the fact that it’s not 100% lego animation, but very cool anyways.
Nice work bit short thoug!/Nett aber nen bischen kurz!
Awesome video. However, to be pedantic, it’s Super Mario Bros 3, not Super Mario World 3 =P
dude, this is awesome!
i dont want you to destroy you life, but make mooore for us!
It’s awesome !!!! I love dude like you
A word of advice. Although the idea is quite outstanding, I’d have to say with the first video it just looks like mario on a table with a mildly hazy filter over it.
To really signify the presence of legos, try using larger blocks and more traditional lego colors as opposed to bitmapping a ton of legos with full 16-bit color.
8-bit color, that is, terribly sorry.
Mario effing kicks danglers.
Why don’t you just come out and say that it was done with an emulator? People will then be able to respect the work that went into it instead of just calling it fake.
